The simple answer is yes, however this is not based on solid medical findings but surveys on men done across the country over the last 10 years.

In essence, some medication use to treat E.D. can stimulate residual penile tissue that still exists in a man with an implant and that tissue can as a result expand, thereby increasing the man’s erection.

Clinical research is still being done to discover whether Viagra taken in conjunction with pellets (MUSE) or injections can additionally enhance a man’s ability to have an erection.

Pellets are medically used in a procedure known as trans urethral therapy.

Essentially this procedure is involves a small pellet of a medication that is put directly into the urethra to simulate an erection. The urethra is the tube that runs through the penis and carries urine from the bladder and out through the tip of the penis.

Today, the most commonly used pellet by urologists is called “MUSE”
(medicated urethral system for erection) which is about the size of a grain of rice. In the MUSE pellet, there is a chemical called “alprostadi” which is a synthetic form of a naturally occurring hormone found in the penis that dilates the blood vessels and creates an erection.

On average, pellets give most men an erection within five to ten minutes. Doctors will prescribe MUSE for patients suffering from E.D. who have vascular disease, diabetes or heart disease as these individuals cannot take other oral medications. For example, MUSE should not be used by those who have hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to the chemical alprostadil, by men with any deformity of the penis, or by men who suffer from sickle cell anemia, leukemia, or multiple myeloma. Typically urologists will not recommend a treatment that involves both the use of pellets and taking oral E.D. medication, unless a patient has had very serious and prolonged problems with E.D.

According to Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra, they indicate the drug is clinically proven to improve erectile function in most men with E.D.

A 28-week study was done by Pfizer of more than 500 men with E.D. where roughly 102 men took 100 mg of Viagra and 205 men took sugar pills and the remaining patients took other doses of VIAGRA. Results of the study found that 85% of men with E.D. who took 100 mg of Viagra achieved fairly strong erections versus 50% of men who were given sugar pills.

Pfizer also indicates that women too have been satisfied with the drug, showing in their study that 92% of women said “Viagra improved their partners’ erections” versus 19% of women whose partners were given sugar pills.

According to Bayer, the manufacturer of Levitra, the drug is clinically proven to improve erectile function in most men with E.D. Bayer also claims over 50 clinical trials involving more than 4,000 men with E.D. resulted in reliable improvements in erectile function.

Their study found that Levitra helped up to 85% of men with Erectile Dysfunction to achieve erections and many men taking the drug reported having stronger erections allowing for overall improvements in their sex lives.

In addition the Bayer study states that Levitra works for men with E.D. including those with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, those taking one or more types of blood pressure medication, as well as for many men with type I or type II diabetes who experience different forms of E.D.

Tadalafil also known as Cialis is the third oral medicine approved in 2003 by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction.

Like Viagra, this drug also inhibits PDE5 which destroys cGMP that ultimately allows blood to flow into the penis resulting in increased engorgement of the penis and an erection to occur in a man.

According to the manufacturer of Cialis, Eli Lilly, they indicate the drug is clinically proven to improve erectile function in most men with E.D., including those with mild, moderate or severe E.D.

Eli Lilly and Company states that in their study of more than 140 patients, a majority of men with E.D. who took 20mg of Cialis were able to achieved erections within 30 minutes after taking the drug.

They have also indicated that Cialis gives men and their partners up to 36 hours to choose the moment to have sex, a much longer period of time for a man to achieve an erection compared to the other FDA approved E.D drugs. Also Eli Lilly indicates that that men do not need to avoid high-fat foods because the absorption of Cialis is not affected by fatty food.

Additionally, for those wondering, the safety and efficacy of combining Cialis and other treatments for E.D. have not been studied and are not recommended.

The simple answer to both questions is no. After takingViagra, Levitra, or Cialis, it typically takes anywhere between 30 minutes to 60 minutes for the drugs to work and a man needs to be sexually stimulated or aroused.

Without some type of sexual stimulation, the drugs do not give instant or spontaneous erections. Also these three drugs have not been proven to permanently cure E.D.; they have only enabled men to achieve longer lasting and harder erections for a better sexual experience.

There are also vacuum-less devices that trap blood within the penis are also available. They are called venous flow controllers or simple constricting devices. These devices are typically rubber or silicone rings or tubes that are placed at the base of the erect penis to trap the erection.

They can be used by men who can achieve erections but lose them easily. These devices should not be used for longer than 30 minutes or lack of oxygen can damage the penis, and they should not be used by patients who have bleeding problems or are taking blood thinner medication.
